December 12, 2003 CORRECTION TO 'Triple Bluff over Taiwan' ARTICLE In the seventh paragraph of the Taiwan piece, it is stated that the first DPP government was elected in 1996. In fact, the president elected in that first free election in Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui, was then still a member of the KMT (Nationalist) party, though he has been closely associated with the DPP since leaving office. The offending line can simply be changed to read 2000: "The gradual democratisation of Taiwan led to the electoral defeat of the long-ruling Nationalist Party in 2000 by the Democratic Progressive Party...."
